A friend wants me as the emergency contact on her son's school form. We have no kids. What am I agreeing to?

A friend from college moved to Kokapet last year with her 6 year old. No family in the city, and her partner travels. She's asked if she can put my name down as the emergency contact on his school form for June, and of course I said yes. Then I realised I have no idea what it involves. If the school calls, what do they expect from me? Go and collect him? Take him to a doctor? Can I even sign anything on his behalf? What should I be asking her before the form goes in?

As a parent who has asked a friend to do this: mostly it means you're the number the school rings when they can't reach us and the child is unwell. In six years ours has been called once. Ask your friend what she'd want you to do if it happens, whether that's going straight there or just keeping on calling her until she picks up.

Once in six years is reassuring. I'd been picturing a 2 pm call in the middle of a client review. Will ask her what she'd want, and get my ID and photo to the school.

Get the practical things sorted before June. Does the school have your photo and ID on file, which gate would you go to, which doctor does he see. Schools won't hand a child over to a name on a form they've never seen.

The ID part is real. Our daughter's school wanted a photo of every person on the list before they'd release her to anyone. Also worth knowing whether he has any allergies. The school will ask you, and you'll want an answer ready.
