7 year old needs a proper meal before her 5 pm class, not another snack

My daughter is 7. She reaches home a little after 3, and twice a week she has a drawing class at 5. On those days she is irritable by 4:30, and the 'small snack' has grown into biscuits, then fruit, then a sandwich, then whatever is in the fridge. My guess, and it is only a guess, is that she needs a real meal and some time doing nothing, rather than more food at intervals. My mother, who stays with us, feels she is simply tired of the class. Both could be true. For those whose children go from school to an activity: what does the hour in between look like in your house? I am more interested in the order of things than in snack ideas.

We had a similar pattern with our daughter at that age. What changed it was treating 3:30 as lunch rather than a snack: rice or roti with dal, at the table, no questions about school. Then twenty minutes on the sofa doing nothing at all. The class went better after that, though I can't tell you whether it was the food or the rest. Our caregiver noticed the difference before we did.

Did the full meal ever make her sleepy before the class? When I tried rice at 4 with my daughter, she was drowsy for the first half of swimming. We went back to something lighter but at a fixed time, and the fixed time seemed to matter more than what was on the plate.

Before changing the food, is the 5 pm slot fixed? Our son had a class at that hour when he was 7 and the evenings looked much the same. We moved it to Saturday morning and most of the irritability went with it. That may not be possible with her teacher. Does she still enjoy the class itself?
