weekend course, four sundays, starts july. he's never been on a boat smaller than a ferry and is completely set on it. i'm not against it. just don't know what to ask before paying, and whether july rain on the lake is a bad idea or part of the fun

Ask who runs it, whether there's a rescue boat out the whole time, and whether life jackets are compulsory. And whether they test swimming before the first session. If they don't ask him to swim, that tells you something.

asked. swimming test first, life jackets throughout, rescue boat yes. he can swim, badly. test is next sunday so we'll see

That they insist on a swimming test is reassuring. It may also be just the push he needs to learn to swim properly, which is worth having whatever happens with the sailing.

My worry would be practical first: what happens on stormy Sundays? Ask whether they cancel and whether missed sessions are made up, or July could turn into one class out of four. And ask what he needs to bring. Wet clothes for the ride home is the part parents forget.
