15 year old's glasses power went up again, and he's stopped wearing them in class

New prescription last month. He chose the frames himself. A classmate's mother mentioned, not him, that he keeps them in his bag during class and squints at the board. When I asked, he said 'only in maths'. Maths is the subject that uses the board most. Not looking for lectures on screen time. Looking for what made your child wear them.

My daughter is 10 and her number also goes up every year. Same thing, she keeps them in the box when friends are around. What changed it was not us. One of her friends got glasses this year, and now both of them wear them together. Maybe he needs one friend with specs in his class.

True, children listen to friends more than us. My daughter is 9 and she wanted glasses only because her friend has them. The eye doctor said no need and she was so disappointed.

From the classroom side: a quiet word with the maths teacher can help. Not to police him, just so he's moved a row or two closer without it being announced. Students who squint usually get noticed eventually, and it's kinder if it's planned. He will likely get past the embarrassment faster than you expect 💛

Moving him closer without announcing it is the right kind of help. I'll email the class teacher. If it's announced, he'll stop wearing them at home too.

With two preschoolers, our turn hasn't come yet. But the friend effect is already strong at their age. They copy each other's everything, so I can believe one bespectacled friend would do more than any of us.
