Our daughter got one last year after a similar campaign. For the first month she used it every day. Now it's mostly for school diagrams and she's back to a sketchbook for anything she cares about. I'd ask her what she wants to make on it. If it's animation or comics, it gets used. If it's 'what everyone has', it ends up in a drawer.
My niece borrowed a cheap one from a friend for a month before anyone bought her anything. She used it twice. Not sure that proves much, she also gave up on the keyboard.
