11 year old wants coffee every morning like us

sage_fern_563

Son has started asking for coffee with breakfast because we both drink it. Right now he gets a few sips in a lot of milk. He wants 'a real one'. At what age did you allow it, if at all? Milk tea seems to be fine in every relative's house, so I don't know why coffee feels different to me.

Ours gets half a cup of milky tea with us on Sundays. Weekdays no. She mostly wants it because it's the grown-up thing, not for the taste.

Same reason here I think. The grown-up part is the whole point for him.

Is your concern the caffeine or the sugar? We let our son have a small cup of filter coffee on weekends, mostly milk, but he puts two spoons of sugar in it, and that bothered me more than the coffee. What does yours take?

Sugar, yes. He'd take three spoons if nobody was watching. Maybe that's the actual rule to set.

I grew up in my ammamma's house drinking a small steel tumbler of coffee from about 8. It was nearly all milk with one spoon of sugar, and it was always the same tumbler, which somehow made it a ritual rather than a free-for-all. A small fixed cup might do the same for him.
