The smallest ones in my dance batch, 5 and 6 year olds, post their hair clips into the gap under the clubhouse mirror. When the mirror was taken down for repairs we found a full box of them.

I teach Mohiniyattam, so a different style, but most of us run the first year this way. Without the adavus done properly, an item later just looks like copying. A few honest things from the teacher's side. Children of 8 usually manage the basics well if the class isn't too long, 45 minutes to an hour. The ones who drop out early are often the ones whose parents stopped coming to watch. And it helps a lot if she can see the older students rehearse once in a while. Ask if she can sit in on a senior batch some day. Seeing where the steps lead does more than anything I can say in class.
