When did you stop making a separate no-chilli portion for the baby?

willow_puzzle_8546

Our son is 1 and eats most of what we eat now, mashed a bit. At home my partner takes out his portion before the chilli and tempering go in, then finishes the rest for us. It works, but everything is effectively cooked twice, and on the days I cook I forget halfway through. Daycare gives him their regular lunch and the daily report says he eats it. I have no idea how spicy it is. At what age did you just start serving the family food as it is? Or did the separate version go on longer than you expected?

  • We kept taking her portion out before the chilli till about 3, mostly out of habit. Then one day she stole a piece of mirchi bajji off my partner's plate, cried for a minute, and asked for another one. After that we stopped bothering 😄

Do you know what daycare actually serves? Ask them to describe one day's lunch. Ours turned out to be fairly spicy and our son was eating it happily, which made the separate cooking at home look rather pointless.

'No chilli' covers a lot. Pepper, a bit of green chilli and red chilli powder are not the same thing. What happens when he gets the full version? If the answer is nothing, there's your answer.

Same for us until roughly two, and that's a while back now. The thing I'd watch is salt more than chilli. Our paediatrician asked us to keep salt low around that age, and family food carries more of it than you'd think. Might be worth asking at your next visit.

My mother's way was to let the baby lick a little rasam off her finger at every meal so the taste came slowly. My son is 10 and still asks for 'ammamma rasam' whenever he's unwell 🙂
