Three 'not yet' boxes on our 3 year old's preschool report, and the teacher says 'let's see by June'

breezy_veranda_1979

The term report came home yesterday. Most boxes say 'achieved', but three say 'not yet': speaks in short sentences, jumps with both feet, takes turns in a group game. My mother, who is with her all day, says she does all of this at home. I've heard the sentences myself; I'm less sure about the jumping. The report doesn't say what happens next, and the teacher only said 'let's see by June'. Is this the sort of thing that sorts itself out at this age, or should I be asking for something more specific? I don't want to overreact to a checklist, but I don't want to wait if waiting is the wrong thing either ❤️

Our son's report at that age had 'not yet' against hopping on one foot and sharing. The hopping came about six months later. The sharing, well, he's 5 and we're still working on it 🙂 I'd ask the teacher to describe what she has seen for each one, rather than go by the box.

Agree, ask for specifics. Our daughter's last report had two 'not yet's. We asked the teacher to show us what she meant, and one turned out to be about shyness in a big group, which looks completely different at home. If something still bothers you after that conversation, your paediatrician is the person to raise it with, not the checklist.

Three boxes out of a whole page at three sounds very ordinary to me, but I understand the knot in the stomach when it's written down. With our younger one, the 'not yet' boxes changed from term to term, different ones each time. Jot down what you see at home over a few weeks, so you have something concrete for the teacher in June ❤️

Ask the school what 'not yet' leads to. If there's no plan behind it, it's a note, not a concern.
