Ten years of veena, and now she only plays film songs on it

ochre_tiffin_2213

Our daughter has learnt veena since she was seven. She is good, not concert good, and it is the one thing she does without being reminded. This term she has stopped practising her lessons and plays film songs instead, picked up from videos, for an hour every evening. Her teacher heard about it and was not pleased. She says it will spoil her hand and her ear, and wants it stopped. My daughter says this is the first time in years she has enjoyed playing. I'm torn. I don't want her to lose the classical side after ten years, but I can also hear her playing every evening, which wasn't happening before. Has anyone's teen gone this way with a classical art, and how did it settle?

she's playing every evening. that's the win. my daughter learnt bharatanatyam for years and in class 8 started doing film dances for reels. teacher sulked for a term, then asked her to choreograph something for the juniors. nobody pushed, it came back round

Paata edaina, vaayinchedi veena ey 😊 But I'd keep one classical class going alongside. My elder one dropped her dance classes completely when she went filmy, and the basics went faster than any of us expected. She's happy with her choice, but ten years is a lot to let slip without deciding to.
