Swimming coach wants parents out of sight. My son won't get in the water unless he can see me

New coach at the KPHB pool from this month. First rule: parents wait outside the glass, not on the benches. Fine in principle. My son stands at the edge, looks for me, can't find me, and won't get in. Two classes, maybe ten minutes in the water in total. Do I push him through it, ask the coach for a week where he can see me, or wait till he's ready? What did you do?

Ask the coach directly for one week at a spot where he can see you. If a coach won't give a child that age one week, that tells you something about the coach. Our daughter needed exactly that at the same age, and by week three she'd forgotten we existed.
