Starting Carnatic vocal with a teacher in Bengaluru, online only. Does that work at 10?

lilac_marigold_2879

Our daughter learnt Carnatic vocal from one teacher here in Medavakkam for four years, until the teacher stopped taking students this summer. Nobody nearby has a slot on the evenings she is free. A cousin's daughter learns online from a teacher in Bengaluru, and that teacher can take her on two evenings a week. My daughter is keen, mostly because the cousin is. I'm the one who isn't sure. She has never met this teacher. Will she still practise without someone sitting across from her? And how does a teacher correct shruti over a laptop? If your child has made this switch, I'd love to hear how it went, good or bad.

My daughter did online keyboard in the lockdown years. First three months were great, then practice slid because nobody heard her between classes. What saved it was her ba sitting in the room during the class. Not helping, just being there 🙂

Ask the teacher what the week between classes looks like online. In person, a teacher notices a missed week of practice within a minute. Online she may not, unless she hears recordings. If she will listen to a short weekly recording, I would go ahead.

We moved from Tamil Nadu last year and my daughter continued her Carnatic class online with her teacher back home. It has worked, mostly. The teacher tunes by ear at the start of every class and corrects the same way she did in person. The weak point is exam time. In class 11 now, after changing boards, she has missed more classes than she has attended.

Tuning by ear at the start, that answers my biggest worry. When she misses classes, does she lose interest, or pick it back up once exams are done?

      Replying to @lilac_marigold_2879

Butting in here. From watching friends' children: the ones who stopped usually stopped because the teacher changed, not because the class went online. If she takes to the new teacher, that counts for a lot more than the screen.

one practical thing from the eye side. if it's a laptop put it on a table at arm's length, not on the bed or her lap. my son's online classes during lockdown gave him a sore neck and tired eyes until we sorted that
