Son studied on his own all summer and wants to start class 8 without tuition

hazel_sketch_1767

He stopped tuition after the annual exams in March. Over the holidays he went through the first few chapters of the new maths and science books by himself, mostly in the mornings, without anyone asking him to. Now he wants to try class 8 with no tuition at all. My partner is fine with it. I'm worried that what works in a quiet summer won't hold up once school, homework and everything else are happening together. Do I let him try, and if so, for how long before we decide?

What exactly did he do over the summer? If he sat with the books without being told, that's the hard part done. I'd give him a full term.

My elder one did class 8 without tuition and only started maths tuition in class 9 when algebra picked up. The thing to watch is the first unit test, not what he promises in June. If he holds his marks there, leave him alone.

Agree a check-in point now, while everyone is calm. Ours is: if marks drop noticeably in any one subject compared to last year, we talk about help for that subject only. Saves a fight later.

teacher here. a lot of tuition at class 8 is just doing the school homework with them. if he can sit with the textbook alone and figure things out thats worth more than any batch. let him try
