son is 4. there's a boy in his class who doesn't speak, uses picture cards with the teacher. yesterday mine asked why he doesn't talk and whether he is angry with everyone i didnt have a good answer in the car. i don't know the other child's details and don't want to guess. how do you explain this at 4 without making it a big thing

I teach young children and we get this question in class quite often. What works at four is simple and true: "Some children talk with words, some talk with pictures or their hands. He's still telling people things, just in a different way." Then let your son lead. If he asks more, answer what you know and say "I don't know" for the rest. The angry part is worth correcting gently. Children that age often read silence as being upset ❤️

    • the kids will be fine with that. my 2 year old accepts anything said confidently. it's the adults in the class group who need the script

yes that's the other half of it. someone in our class group asked if the boy "needs a separate class". i didn't reply. still not sure if i should have

our group is the same. every few weeks someone posts a list of what kids should be doing by now. ive stopped replying to any of it. if i want to know something i ask the teacher not the group
