Since the term began, our son answers only to his surname. Even at home

Since the term started he answers only to our family name. His friends at school all go by surnames now, like cricket commentators, and he wants it at home too. Our 3 year old can't pronounce it and has given up calling him anything. It's harmless, I know. My partner thinks we should go along with it. I find it strange calling my own son by the name on our gas bill. Did your kids go through something like this, and how long did it last?

Ours went through three versions of her name between 11 and 14. We used whichever was current. The last one stuck, and now her grandmother is the only one who still uses the old one 🤷

My son went by his initials for most of class 7. We went along at home, partly because arguing made it bigger. It faded by the end of the year without anyone saying anything. One thing I'd keep an eye on: is it only the commentator thing, or is he trying to get away from a nickname he's been teased about? Ours turned out to be a bit of both.

Hadn't thought of that. His old nickname is a baby name his grandparents gave him, so it may well be part of it. I'll ask him in the car rather than at dinner.

I teach, and by class 6 most boys call each other by surnames, and a few by the names of their fathers' cars. Teachers stick to the register name regardless. At home I'd go along. It costs nothing.
