Putting a 3 year old on a school bus, what did you check before day one

Looking at Little Scholars in Vanasthalipuram for my son. It's a fair distance from Masab Tank, so whether a bus can work for us is honestly what decides it. I still have to check whether any route even comes our way. What I couldn't get a clear answer on is the handover. If our caregiver is 5 min late at the stop, does the bus wait, go back, call someone? And if he misses the bus at the school end, how does the parent even find out? He's 3. I don't want to learn the process on the first day 🥲

For a 3 year old also ask whether there is a woman attendant on the bus. We asked at two places and got very different answers.

  • The one thing I'd want in writing is what happens if nobody is at the stop. With my older son, years back, the helper was late one afternoon and he was taken back to school, and nobody called us for 40 minutes. Ask them to show you how they inform parents, not just tell you ❤️

This is the part that matters. Every place we asked said the attendant will call, but the real question is which number they call first and whether the attendant has it saved before the first day. We put a printed card with two numbers in his bag as well.

our son is 3 too and we went closer mainly because of this. long ride plus handover at that age felt like too many things that could go wrong. not saying dont, just ask how long he'd be on the bus on the worst day

We did one trial run by car, following the route at the actual time, before the first day. It told us more than the admissions office did, mainly how long the ride really takes. The tradeoff is that a good bus to a distant school still means a long day for a small child, and we never fully settled that in our heads.

Small thing but check whether the bus tracking is actually working or just mentioned at the visit. With my son's bus it was coming soon for one full year, no joke

Same with us. The tracking showed where the bus was but not whether the child was on it, which is the part you actually want. We ended up relying on the attendant's message in the class group, which works until the day the attendant is on leave.

Yes, for the next academic year. Was hoping to decide this month but realistically it will drag on a bit. Still going back and forth between this one with the bus and a nearer place with a shorter commute, and every time I make a list it comes out even.
