Private under-16 cricket league wants a fee just to attend selection trials. Normal?

Son is done with his exams and wants to play cricket all summer. He's found a private league online holding 'selection trials' at a ground near the airport. Registration fee to attend the trials, a separate fee if selected, plus their kit. He's keen. I'm not convinced the trials reject anyone who pays. Anyone's son been through one of these? Who runs these things?

At school we get flyers for leagues like this every term. The ones we pass on to parents can usually name the association they're affiliated with and a coach you can look up. If they can't tell you who was picked from their last round of trials, I would be careful.

ask them how many were selected last time and out of how many. if they dodge that, you have your answer. we get the same thing here every summer. the trials are the business

Is it only the fee that's bothering you, or the travel as well? My son's coach tells the boys to go only for trials announced through the academy or the district association. Might be worth asking his school coach what he thinks of this one.

Seri, mostly the fee. Travel I can manage. School coach is unreachable till June, as usual 😅 Will ask at the academy where he plays on Sundays.

Asking the academy is a good filter. A colleague's son went for one of these last year, paid, bowled two overs, never heard back. Not saying they're all like that, but ask them for the date the selection list comes out before you pay anything.
