partner's away at a conference, i'm on call, and the 2 yr old doesn't care about incidents. daughter offered to take him for a few hours if i pay her. she quoted a rate. a good one. fair, or should sibling help be free

my daughter's 13 and she'd do the same. she negotiated a rate for watering the plants last summer. i paid it. felt like i'd lost something, not sure what

We pay for anything beyond normal chores. Looking after a toddler for hours isn't a normal chore. I'd pay, and keep the rate below what an outsider would charge.

Growing up, nobody paid us anything for looking after the younger ones. But I think kids now understand money better than we did. Paying her for real hours of minding him is fine. Just don't start paying for small things, otherwise everything in the house becomes a bill.
