Paid for sports gear and now he wants out

My middle-schooler seemed so sure about joining the next training batch. We bought the equipment and paid up, and now she dreads going. The younger one is asking why we are arguing about a hobby. I can accept changing interests, just not sure how to separate a passing bad week from a genuine wish to stop.
