The Bengali association near us does a small Poila Baishakh evening every year. Songs, a short play by the kids, recitations. Our older one has done a poem every single year since he was six, and the family group waits for the video. This year he told the organiser himself that he's not doing it. No drama, no real reason beyond 'I don't want to stand up there anymore'. His younger brother is happily learning his piece. Part of me says he's a teenager now, let it go. Part of me thinks he'll miss it in a few years and it'll be too late to go back. Do I nudge, or leave it completely? 🤷

Ask him if he'd do something off stage. Plenty of my students stop performing around that age but still turn up to run the sound or the lights if someone asks them properly. Keeps him in the room without the spotlight.

Wish I'd read this a year ago. My son wanted out of the colony's annual day skit and I pushed. He did it with a face like thunder and nobody enjoyed it, least of all him. The backstage idea might have saved all of us
