Our 10 year old needs his own email address for a summer class. Who keeps the password?

He has been writing small programs at home for a while, and the online coding course he wants to join this summer asks each student to sign in with their own email. Until now he has used ours for everything. I am happy to set one up. What I have not decided is how much of it should be his. Do other parents keep the password, read the inbox, or let a 10 year old run his own account with a few rules? I would like to hear what was agreed in your homes, rather than what the guides recommend.
