Only girl at a ten-day football camp, and the coach wants her in the regular batch

lilac_marigold_2879

Our daughter went to a summer football camp near Medavakkam mainly because a friend from our building was going. The friend dropped out on day two. She stayed, and for the rest of the camp she was the only girl among about thirty children. She came home sunburnt every evening and happier than I have seen her all year ❤️ The coach told us she reads the game well and should join their regular evening batch. All boys again, mostly older. She says she doesn't mind. I am trying to work out whether I mind, and why. If your daughter has played in a mostly-boys group, what practical things came up? Changing, toilets, getting home, how the other children treated her once the novelty wore off?

no daughter, and mine is 2, so i'm no use on the practical side. but 'she says she doesn't mind' after ten days of being happier than all year sounds like a yes to me

it was a yes for mine too. football as well, only girl for about a year. toilets were the only real problem, the ground had one and it was for the coaches. ask about that before you pay

I would ask the academy two specific things: how many girls have joined the regular batch in the last two years, and how many are still there. If the answer is none, that does not mean she shouldn't go, but it tells you whether the academy has ever had to think about it. I should say I am reasoning here, not speaking from experience. My son's sports were all boys anyway.

Our 7 yr old wanted to play football after watching the matches with me, and the only batch near us was also all boys. We went for a girls-only Sunday group further away instead. Still don't know if that was right tbh, she misses playing with the colony boys 🤷
