one month in, and every visitor who comes to see the baby stays for lunch

velvet_pebble_6702

my mother is staying with us and cooks for whoever comes. most days that's eight or ten people, often relatives who arrive at 12 and leave at 4. she won't let anyone go without eating she's exhausted and so am i, and the baby is passed around all afternoon. how do you stop this without half the family deciding we've become rude

Give people a time window. Baby sleeps from 12 to 3, visits after 4. Nobody expects lunch at 4.

We tried a visiting window. People came at 12 anyway and said they were 'just passing'. What worked better was ordering lunch in on heavy days. Your mother can't cook for ten if the food is already on the table. She may still be offended, but she'll be less tired.
