olympiad books came home with a payment form. is it actually optional

indigo_bookmark_1392

son is 9, class 4. the school sent home a sample olympiad workbook and a form for the full set plus exam registration. note says optional. half the class group has already paid. he's fine in maths and english, no special interest in competitions. do kids who skip it miss anything or is it just extra books on the shelf

Optional means optional. My son did it in class 4 and 5, got a certificate, enjoyed the exam day, bas itna hi. Didn't make any difference to his school marks either way. If he's not interested, skip.

Half the group paying doesn't mean much, na. People pay so they don't feel left out. My daughter did these for a couple of years in primary. The books sat mostly unopened, only the last week before the exam she'd flip through. If yours enjoys puzzles, ok. Otherwise it's paperwork for you.

Same form came for my son in class 4. What I asked him was whether he wanted to sit the exam, not whether he wanted the books. He said yes to the exam for fun, so we did only the registration and practised from old papers at home. Not sure every school allows that, but worth asking.

He sounds like he's doing well without it, which is the main thing. My son skipped them completely and never once mentioned it, so I don't think kids feel they've missed something. If he asks later, there's always next year ❤️
