Nephew's van ride is forty minutes. Nagarjuna High School is a short walk from us in Ameerpet

Our nephew stays with us on school days, and his current school is about forty minutes away by van in the mornings. Nagarjuna High School is a short walk from our flat, so it keeps coming up at the dinner table. He'll be in class 5 from June, so any change would be for next year at the earliest, and his parents would make the call. I'm the one who sees the commute every day. For families with children in the middle classes there: how much homework comes home, and how have children coming from a different board found the switch to State Board?

Our daughter did all her schooling in State Board, at another school and years ago now. The move between boards in the middle classes was mostly about Telugu and getting used to the textbook style, not about difficulty. A forty-minute van ride each way is a real cost at that age, so I would count the walk strongly in its favour.

I'd ask current parents what an ordinary Tuesday looks like rather than anything about results. What time he would leave home, when homework would start, whether there would be time to play before dinner. A walk to school changes the shape of the whole day. Does he have friends near your flat, or are they all from his current school?

Mostly from the van and his class, so that is the part he worries about. A couple of boys in our building go to schools nearby. I haven't asked their parents yet, which I should.

I work hospital shifts, so I understand the appeal of a short walk. Our son's commute has shaped most of our school choices. If they allow it, I would visit on a normal working day rather than only at an admissions event, and take your nephew along so he can see the classrooms. At ten his opinion will make the change easier or much harder.

son did 40 min each way in a van for six years and says now it was the best part of school, the van gang. so not all loss 🤷 he wasn't doing any homework in it either though

That's the trade-off I can't settle for our daughter either, though she's only 4 so it's years away. Van friendships on one side, an hour of the day back on the other. My partner did a long van ride as a child and remembers it fondly. I walked to school and can't picture it any other way.
