My partner's school reopens a week before our daughter's preschool does. Who covers that week?

All summer the plan has been simple: my partner teaches, so the school holidays are covered at home. This year the dates don't line up. Teachers go back before the children, and our daughter's preschool reopens a week after the big schools. That leaves about eight working days with nobody at home. My office days are back-to-back meetings, and I'd rather not burn leave I'll need later in the year. Do people find a short holiday programme for one week, swap days with another family, or does one of you just take the leave and accept it?
