My partner now sends baby updates like a labour-ward handover

fig_compass_3027

I'm an obstetrician, and this year my partner looks after our son full time. On my long days the messages come through the afternoon, and somewhere along the way they turned into the format my labour-ward staff use. Today's 2 pm update: 'Feeds: 2, good. Nap: 40 min, unsettled. Output: significant. Mood: stable, demanding.' Followed by 'Plan: reassess at 4.' I have never felt so professionally understood at home.

Please ask for vitals next. I get 'all good' and a blurry photo, and I have to call to find out what 'all good' covers 🙂

Writing this between deliveries. Tonight's update was just 'asleep, finally, don't call'.

'All good' is not an update. Make a template and send it over. Ours has three lines and nobody argues about it.

  • I'll admit I did the same when the girls were small and my partner was travelling, only mine were sprint updates. 'Blockers: teething.' My partner did not find it as charming as you do.

This made my morning ❤️ We kept an on-call style log for our younger one's fever nights, times and temperatures, all very official. It's still in my notes app and it's oddly sweet to read now.
