my 14 year old has started running before school. nobody asked him to

about three weeks now. alarm at 5.40, out the gate, back by 6.20, shower, school bus. no friends involved, no app that i can see, no announcement. i only found out because the watchman mentioned it. i'm trying very hard not to comment, not to buy him anything, not to ask how far he goes. it feels like the kind of thing that stops the moment a parent notices. just wanted to write it down somewhere

I'd make one exception to not buying anything: shoes. I started running at about that age in whatever I had and my knees complained by college. If you can get him a proper pair without making a speech about it, maybe just leave them in the shoe rack as if they were always there.
