Music class or extra maths tuition on her one free weekday evening?

banyan_moon_8000

My elder one is in class 5 and has exactly one free evening in the week, Monday. She wants to start Carnatic vocal then, an aunty in our lane teaches a small group. My partner thinks we should use it for maths tuition because her last two tests were just ok. Nothing bad, just ok. She sings all day at home anyway, ammamma taught her a few keerthanas during the summer. I'm leaning towards music, but I don't want to be the one who said no to maths help when class 6 gets harder. It may help to separate the two questions. 'Just ok' marks in class 5 could mean several things, and tuition is only one answer. Do you know where the marks went? If it's careless errors, an extra evening of tuition may not change much. My son has kept one activity he chose himself right through school so far, and I don't think his marks suffered for it. That's one child, of course.

My daughter started Carnatic vocal at about the same age, also one weekday evening with a teacher near our house. She is 16 now and it is the thing she cares about most. I won't pretend it made school simpler. We have our own arguments now about what she will study after class 10. But if she is already singing all day at home, I would give her the class. Maths help can be found later if it is really needed.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear, arguments included 😄 Partner was reading over my shoulder and said 'see, problems later'. We'll start music next month and look at the maths again after the half-yearly results.
