Is 8 too early for proper touch typing? She's been pecking at my old laptop for weeks

She's been writing stories on my old laptop for a few weeks now. Two fingers, eyes on the keys, very slow and very determined. There are free typing games that teach the proper finger positions, and I'm tempted. At the school where I teach, typing doesn't come in till grade 4, and a couple of colleagues are convinced it ruins handwriting if it starts earlier 🤷 Anyone started a child on proper typing at this age? Did it stick, and did the handwriting suffer?

Ours is younger, just finished class 1, and types his own name with one finger, very proud. No idea about the right age. But my partner learnt at a typing institute at 14 and is still the fastest typist we know, so starting later doesn't seem to hurt either 🙂
