Is 17 old enough to manage contact lenses instead of glasses?

Dikri has worn glasses for years. She's 17 and now she wants contacts, partly for sports, mostly because of a cousin's wedding in December and the photos. Her Ba thinks lenses will 'spoil her eyes'. I think she can handle it, but this is also the girl who loses a hair clip a day. For those whose teens switched: who did the fitting, and did they keep up with the cleaning part?

Got mine at 16. Lost one down a hostel sink in the first month 😂 Kept them going for years after that though. The hair clip record is a fair worry.

Down the sink 🙂 That's exactly the story Ba must not hear.

Small update. Took her for a proper eye check this morning. They want a trial pair for two weeks first and then a follow-up visit. She has already set three phone alarms for cleaning, let's see how long those survive.

17 is a perfectly normal age to start. what matters is the habits. clean hands before touching them, don't sleep in them unless they're made for it, no tap water anywhere near them, and replace on schedule not when they 'still feel fine'. from what i've seen most trouble in teens comes from stretching a monthly pair to three months 🤷 a trial pair with a follow-up like you're doing is the sensible way

The stretching point is exactly what happened with my son. He was told monthly, quietly made one pair last most of a term, and only told us when his eyes started going red. Glasses on school days now, lenses only for football.

does a fitting at the optical shop count or should it be an eye doctor. the shop near us offers to do it free with the lenses
