How many schools did you apply to for LKG? My list is at seven and growing

Admissions for next June seem to open somewhere between September and November depending on the school, and I've started a spreadsheet, because that's what I do at work too. Seven schools around Madhapur and Kondapur so far, a mix of ICSE and IB, each with its own form, its own fee and its own interaction date. Seven feels excessive. Colleagues tell me they applied to three and got into one, and I can't tell if that's a warning or reassurance. How many did you end up applying to, and how did you cut the list down?

My son's admissions were many years ago, so this is what we did, not necessarily how it works now. We applied to four. What cut the list was not the curriculum but the drive: we sat in drop-off traffic for each school once, and two came off the list that week. I would also separate the schools you would be happy with from the ones you are applying to out of anxiety. In my experience the second list is usually the longer one.

The drive test is a good idea. Two of mine are on the list because 'everyone says it's good', and I've never seen them at 8 am.

One more question, if you don't mind. Did applying early to your first choice make any difference, or was it the interaction that decided things?

I'm not a parent yet, only planning, and I've just read this whole thread at 4 am. If applying early matters, does that mean people start looking when the child is two? Trying to understand how far ahead all this begins.
