How does Oakwood in Kothapet take children from play-based UKG to written work in class 1?

A mother I got talking to at a birthday party has a son at Oakwood International in Kothapet, and she described their UKG to class 1 move as 'smooth'. I'm a teacher at a CBSE school, and I've heard 'smooth' used for every possible approach. My daughter is in a play-based kindergarten and we're beginning to think about class 1 for next year. Not set on any school. For Oakwood parents, or anyone who asked them: does writing build up gradually through UKG, or does class 1 arrive with full notebooks on day one?

  • Not Oakwood, and our son's school is IB throughout, so I can't compare directly. But when his cousins moved from play-based kindergartens into CBSE class 1, the writing was not what tripped them up. Sitting at a desk for forty minutes was. Whichever school you look at, I'd ask about that as much as the notebooks.

fair. sitting is what i notice with the new joiners at my school too, more than handwriting. still want to know how this one paces it though

My cousin's boy is at Oakwood, class 2 now. She says it didn't feel like a sudden jump for him, the writing came in slowly. That's one family only, so ask them directly also 🙂
