His thatha wants him at my partner's old school from UKG. We had planned to wait till class 1

Our son is in a small preschool he loves, and the plan was to keep him there for UKG and apply for class 1 next year. My partner's father has other ideas. He wants him to start UKG this month at the school my partner went to, says class 1 seats there go to their own children and we'll be "left outside". I don't know if that's true or something from thirty years ago. Grandparents help us two days a week, so this isn't an argument I want to have lightly. Has anyone moved a child for UKG just to be safe for class 1, or stayed put and managed fine?

No experience yet, ours is a baby. But I already hear 'your father's school' from my side of the family, so I'll be reading the replies here with interest.

What does the school itself say? Some schools do fill most of class 1 from their own UKG, others take plenty of outside children. Thirty-year-old information could go either way 😄

    • That's what I'd check first. Ask the office directly how many class 1 seats usually go to children from outside. Then you're arguing about a number, not a feeling.

We've just decided to keep our daughter at her preschool another year instead of moving her to a big school. She still naps after lunch, and the big school day would have been 8 to 3. That decided it for us more than seats did.

The nap is exactly my worry too. He still sleeps a good hour after lunch, every day ❤️ I hadn't put that in front of his thatha, maybe I should.
