Hindi tutor twice a week this summer, or let his dadi read with him?

Our son's school has Hindi for only a few periods a week, and he reads it slowly, sounding out every matra. His dadi is at home with us anyway and has offered to sit with him every afternoon. A neighbour recommends a tutor who would come home twice a week. The tutor would be structured and he'd take it more seriously. With his dadi it's warmer, but they end up chatting and the book gets put down after five minutes. With the baby in the house, my mother also has less time than she thinks. I can't decide which one will move his reading forward.

We did both for Marathi when our daughter was about that age. The grandmother time did more for her speaking, the tutor more for her reading. If reading is the goal, I'd lean tutor. But could your mother choose the books? Ours picked old stories she knew herself, and that's the part our daughter still remembers. How does he feel about it himself?

    • He wants neither, naturally. But he perked up when I suggested Dadi pick the stories, so maybe that's the split: the tutor for the mechanics, my mother for the reading he chooses.
