Her history answers are long and correct, and they keep losing marks to three-line answers

My 12 year old got her ICSE history and civics paper back. Long answers, everything right as far as I can see, and middling marks. Her friend wrote three or four lines per question and scored more. I asked the teacher, who was very kind about it. The marking is on 'key points', and my daughter's key points are in there, just buried in the middle of a paragraph where the examiner has to hunt for them. The advice was to start each answer with the points and explain after, if at all. I can see it works. It also feels like teaching her to write for a marking scheme rather than to understand anything, and she enjoys writing the long version. My younger one is only in class 2, so I've never had to think about this before. Did you coach your child into the points format, or let them find it the hard way?
