Grandparents upset about a latch on our class 9 daughter's bedroom door

indigo_kite_2717

She's in class 9 and asked for a small latch on the inside of her door, for when she's changing or wants to be left alone. My partner and I are fine with it. My parents, who come over on agreed days, feel that a closed door in the house means something is wrong. Has anyone handled this between generations without somebody sulking for a week?

What exactly is the grandparents' worry? 'Disrespectful' could mean they feel shut out, or that they think she's hiding something. Those need different conversations.

Shut out, mostly. My mother walked into my room without knocking till the day I left home. I asked her this evening and she said the house is starting to feel like a hostel.

Our nephew went through the same at about 12. What settled it was a rule for everyone, adults included: knock and wait. His grandmother was the strictest about it within a month, because she liked having her own door respected too.

Knock and wait for everyone. That is simple enough to put to my parents. Thanks.
