First remark in the class 1 diary says he talks during lessons. Do I reply to it?

sage_drum_6302

The diary came home with a note from the class teacher: 'Talks during lessons, please speak to him.' No details, signature required. He's 6 and chatty, and I'm sure the remark is fair. What I don't know is the etiquette. Do I just sign? Write something back? Ask what exactly happened? I don't want to sound defensive the first time I write in that diary, and I want to find out whether this is a one-off or a pattern.

I'd sign and add one line, something like 'Noted, we have spoken to him. Is there a particular time of day this happens?' It acknowledges the note and asks for detail without arguing. With my son it was only ever the period after lunch, which made the conversation at home much easier.

That's a good line, short enough not to look defensive. Did the teacher write back when you asked?

Also, how did you talk to him about it? Mine will just say he wasn't talking, his friend was.

Sign it, write 'Will speak to him', done. Teachers write these for half the class some weeks. If it comes again, then ask for a meeting.

You're probably right that I'm overthinking one line. Signed it with 'Spoke to him, thank you.' Saving the question for the next remark, if there is one.
