Every story my son writes for school is about the same video game

He's in grade 2 at an IB school, where writing is mostly free stories and journals. For the last two months every single one has been set inside the same video game he plays at weekends: same characters, same levels, occasionally a new boss. His teacher seems relaxed about it, and the writing itself is improving, longer sentences, some dialogue. I'm less relaxed. Part of me thinks any writing is good writing at seven, and part of me thinks he isn't stretching at all. Do I nudge him towards other topics, or let it run its course?

my daughter's stories were all about our building's cat for most of a year. teacher didn't mind, we did. tried one rule: one story a week about anything else, her choice what. she grumbled, then wrote one about the watchman that was better than every cat story put together

One a week about something else feels fair, and it leaves him the rest. I'll put it to him as his choice of topic rather than a rule and see if it survives the weekend.
