Elder one wants college anywhere but Hyderabad because his friends are looking at Pune and Bengaluru

Kanna is in class 12 and has decided he wants to go out for college. Not a particular college, not even a particular course yet. Just 'not Hyderabad'. Two of his close friends are looking at Pune and one at Bengaluru, and suddenly those are the only two cities on earth. His appa thinks living alone for a few years will be good for him. I'm the one making lists in my head. Food, laundry, who he calls if he's sick at 2 am. We have no family in either city. How did you work out whether the wanting-to-leave was about the course or about the friends? Or does it even matter at this age?

Ask him to name three courses he'd want in each city. If he can't, it's the friends. If he can, take it seriously. And he will be sick at 2 am at some point whether he's in Pune or in a hostel forty minutes from you. That worry isn't really about distance.

Asked him last night. Pune: two courses, both ones his friend is applying for. Bengaluru: 'whatever is good'. So, friends. But he also said he wants to see if he can manage on his own, and I can't really argue with that part. He also assured me Pune food will be 'fine'. Paavam, he has never gone more than a week without rasam.

I am from Maharashtra, we came to Hyderabad two years back. Food in Pune he will manage, there is everything now, south Indian also. My cousin's son studies there and shares a flat with boys from Telangana and Andhra. The bigger change will be talking to landlords and shopkeepers, but Hindi works almost everywhere.
