DP maths starts in July. Does she need an 'IB tutor', or will a good maths tutor do?

Our older one starts IB DP next month and has picked maths AA at higher level. She's asked for a tutor from the start because a senior told her it gets hard fast. The centres near Gachibowli advertising 'IB specialists' charge roughly double what a regular maths tutor charges. Is that difference real, or is it the label? Maths is maths, my partner says.

Ask them what 'IB specialist' means in their own words. Then ask to see a piece of work they marked against the IB criteria. If they can't show you one, you have your answer.

Way ahead of my stage, ours is in class 2. But my didi's daughter did IB in Pune, and from what I heard, the maths itself any strong tutor could handle. Where she needed help was the IA, the written project, and that's where knowing IB mattered 🙂

VP at a CBSE school here. Some of our best maths teachers tutor IB students in the evenings. Ask for one trial session. You'll know.

We relocated from Gurugram this year, and I am still trying to understand the tutor market here for my daughter, who is in class 10 CBSE. One observation from the last two months: in Hyderabad almost every tutor advertises themselves by board. In Gurugram it was more by subject. I have stopped looking at the label and started asking which school the tutor's current students attend, and whether I can speak to one of their parents. It has saved me two bad choices already.

half the 'specialist' boards in our area are the same tutor with three different banners.

Does her school give any guidance on this? At my son's PTM last year the teachers told us quite plainly which kinds of tuition clash with how they teach. That was more useful than any list of names.

wait a month into DP before booking anyone. she'll know by then which part she can't follow, and you'll be paying for that, not for everything
