does anyone's company pay for extra childcare when you travel for work

mango_hammock_8380

three trips this quarter. each one means the nanny stays two nights and i pay her extra, plus a cab for my cousin who comes over in the evenings. adds up to more than my hotel. asked hr. they said there's no policy and nobody has ever asked. is that normal or has someone got this through

Never seen it in a policy anywhere I've worked. When I had a run of out-of-town research sessions, my manager agreed to let me fly back the same night instead of staying over. Cost the company more in tickets, saved us the second night of care. Might be easier to ask for that kind of trade than for a new policy :)

Hospital covers conference travel for me, never anything at home. Out of curiosity, is your HR here or abroad? Some foreign-headquartered firms have a dependent care benefit in their home country that never got extended to India.

Universities don't, at least not ours. I'm on leave right now with a one month old and already dreading the first conference. Would love to know if you get anywhere.

I manage people who travel, so this is from the approving end. I've approved travel for people on my team for years and never seen childcare in a policy. What I have seen work is someone putting the care cost in writing next to the trip cost and asking whether the trip could be shorter or done remotely. It turns a benefit request into a planning question. It doesn't get you the money, but it got one colleague from three trips a quarter down to one.

ours neither. the hotel gets a minibar, the nanny gets nothing 😄 good on you for asking though, nobody does
