Do tabla teachers really not take children before 8?

lemon_tiffin_7349

Our daughter heard a tabla recital at a relative's housewarming and has talked about nothing else since. We found a teacher near Bachupally who takes children on weekends, but he says he doesn't start anyone before 8 because the hands are not ready. He suggested vocal classes in the meantime. She isn't interested in singing. She wants to hit things. Is the age rule common with tabla teachers, or is it worth looking for someone who will take her now? If anyone has found a good way to keep that interest going for a year, I'd like to hear it.

My son started keyboard at 7 and his teacher had a similar view about hand size for some pieces. She let him start anyway with simpler exercises. He stopped at 9, but that was more about cricket than the age. Maybe ask the teacher if your daughter can sit in and watch a class or two till then. Sometimes that keeps them hooked.

no answer on the age rule, but my 4 year old drums on every steel plate in the house, so i understand the 'wants to hit things' part completely

I teach primary, and our music teacher does a lot of rhythm work with clapping, body percussion and simple hand drums before any child touches a proper instrument. The children love it and it builds the counting and listening that tabla needs later. You could ask the tabla teacher what he would want her to be able to do by 8, and practise that at home. A 7 year old who can keep a steady beat for a whole song will walk in ahead.

This is what we follow in our school's junior section as well. Rhythm games first, instrument later. Most children don't even notice they are 'waiting'.
