Daycare is adding a few basic signs to the toddler room because one child is deaf. Should we use them at home?
Our daycare told parents this week that a deaf toddler is joining our daughter's room, and the staff will use some basic Indian Sign Language alongside speech with all the children, things like eat, sleep, more and finished. They offered families a short sheet of the signs. I think it's a good thing and asked for the sheet. One parent in the group has asked whether signing could slow down speech for the hearing children, and nobody had a clear answer. My understanding is that it doesn't, but I don't have much to base that on. The other question is whether we should use the signs at home as well, so it's consistent for our daughter, or leave it as a daycare thing. Has anyone's child been in a room like this?
