Daycare has started a 'one bite of everything' rule, and our daughter now dreads lunch

willow_sandal_3929

Her daycare introduced a rule this month that every child tastes one bite of each dish before leaving the table. The idea is sensible, and I know plenty of children come round to new foods that way. Our daughter has started asking every morning what lunch will be, and on two days she cried at drop-off because it was 'the green dal'. At home, with no rule at all, she eats reasonably well. Has anyone had a child react this way to a tasting rule? Did it settle, or did you ask the daycare to ease off for her?

Worth asking the staff what the rule looks like at the table rather than as written. 'One bite' can mean a teacher kneeling beside her with a spoon, or it can mean one bite-sized piece placed on her plate that she is free to ignore. The second is much easier on a child. If it's the first, I would ask whether she can serve herself the bite.

Two crying drop-offs out of how many days? Two out of fifteen, I'd wait. Two out of four, talk to them this week. Also: is she upset about the dal or about being watched while she eats it?

The being-watched part is a good question. My son hated eating in front of the class aunty at that age. The food was never the issue, the audience was. Once the aunty started sitting at the next table instead of his, he was fine.
