College wants first-year BTech students to bring a laptop with 32 GB RAM and a graphics card

Son's admission letter came with a 'recommended configuration'. 32 GB RAM, a dedicated GPU, a particular processor generation. For first year, where as far as I know they do engineering drawing, physics and a C programming lab. I design cloud systems for a living. Nothing he does in first year needs that machine, and anything heavy later should run on a lab server or in the cloud anyway. He, of course, has read the sheet very carefully and agrees with the college. Did your children's colleges hold them to these lists? Or is it a sheet nobody updates?

I'd ask the college one plain question: which first-year course uses the GPU, and in which semester? If they can name one, fine. If the answer is 'it's for the future', buy a sensible machine now and upgrade when a real course asks for it. My nephew's college sent a similar list and every lab he had used the college desktops.

Emailed the admissions office last night, reply came this morning. The answer is 'AI and ML electives'. Those are in third year. He'll want a new laptop by then anyway.

Partly fair, though. RAM is the one thing I wouldn't skimp on, because a laptop that crawls with a browser, an editor and a couple of containers open is miserable to work on. 16 is enough for years. The GPU is the part I'd skip.

as a vice principal i can tell you, these lists usually get written once by someone who wants the top end and then copied every year. nobody checks if a first year uses any of it

That matches. The sheet even names a Windows version that's two releases old. 16 GB, no GPU, and he can make his case again in third year.
