Class 7 started this month and our son has asked me to stop checking his homework diary

Since class 3 I've looked at his diary every evening, signed where needed and gone over what's due. Last night he asked, quite politely, if I could stop. He's in class 7 now, he says, and his friends' parents don't do that. Hovering over a class 7 boy's planner is not the parent I want to be, but I also know he missed two submissions in March, which is partly why I kept checking. For those who stepped back around this age, did you hand it over all at once or bit by bit? What did you still keep an eye on?

I coordinate at a school, and the class 8 children who organise themselves best tend to be the ones whose parents let go in stages, not overnight. One arrangement I've seen work is that he checks the diary himself and tells you on Sunday what's due that week, and you only open it if something comes back late. If he misses a submission or two along the way, that's part of learning it. A teacher's reminder lands differently from a parent's.

The Sunday summary is a nice middle step, thank you. He'll probably agree to it because it sounds like less of me. I'll tell him the late-submission rule upfront so it doesn't feel like a trap ❤️
