Class 5 has a dictionary skills test. Who still owns a paper dictionary?

amber_window_9588

Her English teacher has announced a test on finding words in a dictionary: guide words, alphabetical order to the third letter, that sort of thing. Fair enough. The children are meant to practise at home with a printed one. We found mine from engineering college. It's missing everything from Q to S. Is there a children's dictionary people like, or does any basic one do?

Our school did this in class 4. Any school dictionary works, the kids just need the guide words at the top of each page. My younger one looked up words for fun after that. It lasted three weeks.

Is the test about speed or about understanding how a dictionary is organised? Our son only uses an online one at home, and I've wondered whether he could manage a paper one at all. Curious what the test looks like.

Keep the engineering one for yourself ❤️ We bought a small illustrated school dictionary when ours had this test. Bigger print, fewer words, so she wasn't flipping through ten pages to find 'cat'.
