Class 2 teacher says he skips whole lines when reading aloud. At home he reads fine

Teacher wrote in the diary that our younger one skips lines and loses his place when the class reads aloud, and suggested 'some reading practice at home'. At home he reads picture books to his ammamma every evening, no problem. The difference I can think of is that the class reader has much smaller print and more lines on each page. I work in schools, so I know how often 'more practice' is the default suggestion. Is there something I should check before we start drilling him on reading?

Get his eyes checked before anything else. Small print, many lines, losing his place: worth ruling out vision or tracking first. Practice won't fix that. School screenings are quick and miss things.

I'd agree with getting a proper eye examination. School screenings usually check distance vision on a chart, and a child can pass that and still struggle with close work on dense print. A full examination at his age doesn't take long and he won't find it unpleasant. If it comes back normal, then you know the reading practice is the right next step.

Thank you both. That makes complete sense, and I'm a little embarrassed it didn't occur to me first. Booking an appointment this week.

One more question. Does it need to be an ophthalmologist, or is an optometrist at a good optician enough for a first check at seven?
