Class 1 daughter has started wetting the bed again after two dry years

fig_river_1142

Need some practical advice from parents. My younger one is in class 1. She was fully dry at night from around 4. Since the summer holidays, two or three nights a week the bed is wet in the morning. Her elder brother never had this. She is very shy about it, bacchi tries to hide the sheet before anyone sees. We have not scolded her even once. The doctor at our unit said it happens at this age and will pass, but did not say much about what to do at home meanwhile. We will probably move to Secunderabad on posting early next year, new school, new house. I don't want this to become a bigger thing for her by then. What did you do day to day?

Our daughter was dry by 4, then had a phase at 6, for no reason we could find. Lasted a couple of months. We put a waterproof sheet on, changed things in the morning without any comment, and it stopped on its own. The no-comment part was harder than it sounds, especially for the grandparents.

Our son is still a baby, so no tips from the parent side. I was one of those kids till about seven, though. What I remember is not the sheets, it's an uncle joking about it at a family wedding. If anyone in the family teases her, shut that down first. The rest your daughter will sort out in her own time :)

Our girl is about the same age and still has a wet night maybe once in ten days. Our paediatrician wasn't worried at this age either. She told us to come back if it became every night after seven, or if there were daytime accidents too. Meanwhile we just don't ask her about it in the mornings.

old trick from when ours was small: make the bed twice. sheet, waterproof layer, sheet, waterproof layer. at 2 am you peel off the top two and everyone is back asleep in five minutes. no big light, no discussion

Reading this with a one-year-old still in diapers and wondering when we even start thinking about nights. My mother says no water after dinner from now itself, which feels wrong to me. Is that something people really do?

I wouldn't cut water for a one-year-old at all. Nights are a question for much later, after daytime training, and worth taking to your paediatrician then. A six-year-old's situation is a different thing altogether.

Checking back on this. Since you mentioned the move, one small thing: if you are travelling by train for the posting, keep a separate bag with a change of clothes and a sheet within reach for the night. My parents did that for my brother on every long journey and it took the worry out of it for him.
